Hi, thanks for stopping by MOVEMENT MARTIAL ARTS! Movement Martial Arts is a movement dedicated to bringing science to the practice of both Traditional and Mixed Martial Arts. Movement Martial Arts was started by me (Frankie Faires).

I’ve been in Martial Arts since I was eight years old. I’ve training either formally or informally in a number of Martial Arts, the most recent being: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Martial Arts is my love, my passion, but not because it’s easy for me. I’m not a natural athlete nor Martial Artist.

Being born on the Autism Spectrum, I have both cognitive and motor deficiencies which makes me a slow learner both mentally and physically. In addition, I have had multiple chronic pain issues (with most being completely resolved). These “dis-abilities” have forever changed how I approach the Martial Arts. What others can do intuitively, I’ve had to break down to excruciatingly tiny pieces and take incredibly small steps. While this has hindered me as an athlete, it has aided me as a teacher.

I’ve heard it said that it best to look at either or both an individual’s competition (I’ve rarely competed and am not a particularly good competitor) or their lineage (Sr. Mitsuyo “Count Koma” Maeda -> Carlos Gracie Sr. -> Carlos “Carlinhos” Gracie Jr. -> Carlos Machado -> Me) when considering them as an instructor. It makes a lot of sense when you’re looking for someone to replicate what has been done before.

But I’m not going to tell you what was told to me. I’m not going to show you what was shown to me. It didn’t work all that well for me. I had to find something that did, something that was far, far simpler.

I like this quote adapted from Sifu Bruce Lee, “The height of cultivation leads not to complication but to simplification.” In order to reach competency, I had to break both thoughts and movements down to their component pieces. When I taught for my Master, Carlos Machado, I found that sharing these very simple things helped my students get better, faster. Now, I want to share them with you.
